A place to hide

I lay still in the darkness

praying sleep takes over me

Maybe it is my friends’ footsteps I hear

trying to outrun the bullets

Yesterday there was life

and laughter

In the morning light

I shall see rubble and ruin

and blood.

Yay! This entry of mine was the crowd favourite in Yeah Write weekly challenge #211 microstories. The prompt (to be answered in exactly 42 words) was: “Why are you still awake?”.

Thank you to everyone who voted for me!
